Zoom interviews are convenient and often preferred by hiring teams in Israel, but they come with their own set of challenges. From technical glitches to unexpected interruptions, there’s a lot that can go wrong if you’re not prepared. The good news? With the right setup and strategy, you can make just as strong an impression as you would in person. These tips will help you navigate your next Zoom interview like a pro.
Set yourself up for success
Before the interview, check your set-up to ensure you’re putting your best foot forward.
- Quiet, please! Make sure you’re in a space where you won’t be interrupted. Family members should not be around or they should be on strict instructions not to disturb you. Ask a spouse, friend or relative to take the kids out of the house, if possible, and not come back until you let them know you’re finished.
- Check your Zoom background – Keep it clean and neutral. No political posters, personal details or clutter. Blur it if needed or use a virtual background.
- Dress for success – If you’re tempted to dress nicely only from the waist up, remember that it’s entirely possible that you will have to get up at some point to close a door, reach for something or head to the closest shelter. Dress as you would for an in-person interview to avoid awkward moments.
- Tech check – Log in early, test your camera and mic and ensure your internet connection is solid.
Timing matters
- Disclosures need to wait – If you need to disclose anything like pregnancy (once you’ve hit the 20-week mark), upcoming vacations or a flexible schedule requirement, wait until the end of the interview. Let both sides see if it’s a good fit first.
- Ask about salary – Leave this question to the end, since you don’t want the interviewer to think that’s your primary concern, but don’t forget to ask. Ensure your expectations align before investing time in another round, a test or a presentation. Israeli employers often turn this question around and may ask you what your salary expectations are. Be prepared with an answer in case that happens.
A Zoom interview may be virtual, but your impression is very real. Prepare well, present your best self, and take that next career step with confidence!
